Experiment 1 Bubble Fountain

10-03-08 Flatiron Building, Front Street

This preliminary experiment was not initially designed as a part of Playspace but simply came spontaneously into existence during a night of frolicking. The following is the result of pouring 8 canisters of biodegradable dish cleaning liquid into an active fountain and would be the impetus for the iterative nature of Playspace.

6 feet of foam

This night gave me the creative energy to begin the project and showed me what a true idyllic play experience should look like. At its apex the giant foam creation had almost a dozen people interacting with it several of whom were not know to me all coming together to simply play with foam

Strangers interact with the foam

The bubble fountain showed me a way to judge if something is having the desired idyllic effect on people . I have since observed it at other times when play is occurring but only ever from girls, likely because its not very masculine to let out a high pitched screaming laugh when delighted over the playful nature of bubbles. Its hard to describe exactly how to tell when a laugh filled shriek is actually playful but when you hear it you will know, it must be some primal human connection because its really indescribable any other way. Additionally the bubbles led me to make the connection that people really need to be able to shape their experiences in some way to really enjoy them, thus we have learned.

CREATIVITY FROM THE USER IS CRUCIAL TO SUCCESS.
